Criteria for Evaluation of Essays & Grading
Scale
These are the criteria I will use to evaluate your final
drafts:
- the thesis:
is it clear, well-conceived, appropriately specific for an essay
of the desired length? (To be eligible for a "satisfactory" grade,
an essay must have a thesis.)
- structure: is the essay organized as well as
possible to achieve the writer's purpose(s)?
- content: is the content relevant? does it
advance the writer's thesis?
- form: spelling, mechanics, control of standard
written English (or an alternative idiom if that is appropriate to
the essay's purposes and methods)
- does the essay address the question, problem, expectations of
the assignment?
