The International Association
for the Fantastic in the Arts

The IAFA is a scholarly organization devoted to the study of the fantastic (broadly defined) as it appears in literature, film, and the other arts. The purpose of the organization is to promote and recognize achievement in the study of the fantastic, mainly through the organization and management of an annual academic conference, the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA). There are two publications connected to the IAFA: the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, which is a peer-reviewed journal for scholarship within the field of the fantastic, and the newsletter, which publishes information relevant to the IAFA membership.

In March, 2009, IAFA will be arranging

Doris Lessing Wins Nobel Prize

The International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA) is delighted that Doris Lessing, Guest of Honor at the 1989 International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts and longtime IAFA friend, has been awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature. Writing on her Children of Violence series, The Guardian states on its website : "By combining literary science fiction with a stringent, pioneering brand of feminism, Lessing gave a glimpse of the qualities for which she was to become famous." As an author of the fantastic and only the 11th woman to win the award in Nobel's 106-year history, nothing can take the bloom off this honour. Congratulationson this well-deserved award!

The IAFA Web is maintained by Graham J. Murphy, Jim Casey, Stefan Ekman, and Len Hatfield on the CATH server at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. We are grateful for the continuing support of the Center for Applied Technologies in the Humanities, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Information Systems for the use of these facilities.
